Kappa-Omega Zeta at Georgetown College Chapter History |
![]() |
The League and Covenant of Theta Kappa Nu (the League) was written at the founding of the national fraternity in Springfield, MO, in June 1924. It expresses the tenants of the fraternity and unites its signatories in the bond of brotherhood. Each chapter was presented with its own hand-written copy when installed. Signing the chapter's League was part of the fraternity's initiation. Sometime after the Union occurred, Kentucky-Alpha's League was sent to LCA headquarters and stored away for almost fifty years. Perhaps the books were "confiscated" from each chapter shortly after the Union in 1939, or perhaps our chapter's League was sent along with ritual books at the time chapter operations ceased in 1942.
In about 1988 headquarters mailed Kentucky-Alpha's League to Kappa-Omega, and it has remained in the chapter's archives ever since. It is a simple lined, blank notebook with the text of the Covenant hand-written followed by the numbered signatures of the initiates. The first 38 signatures are those of the Charter Members who signed at the installation on May 19, 1928.
The book is in very delicate shape and easily damaged when handled, so images of the pages are provided here for members to view. (Or just click on the cover to the right to enter)
The signatures are listed and numbered in the order that initiates signed the book at their initiation. The numbers are almost always different from the Zeta numbers assigned in 1939 or later. In the case of four charter members, their names do not appear on our current chapter roster and they apparently were never assigned a Zeta number, though their own signature proves they were initiated in 1928. In the case of E.G. Traylor (#50), his name was apparently lost from the roll in the 30's, but added to the list as Zeta #606 a few decades later. [NOTE: at this point, I am unsure of this...#606 may have been another brother named Traylor...still investigating]
The hand-written numbers also may not be the same as those officially assigned to initiates by QKN headquarters: brother Joe Stone always said he was #12; but he signed 25th and was assigned Zeta #13. Perhaps he was simply mistaken about his own number, something completely understandable for brothers of the 1920's and 30's.
Another "mix up" that brothers heard about from Tim Juett at homecoming on many occassions, well into the 1980's: Zeta numbers 109, 110, and 111 were accidentally "skipped." When the mistake was discovered, Juett and two other brothers were assigned the skipped numbers, making them appear older than they actually were (though only by a couple of years!) Its unfortunate the names of four of the "lost charter members" weren't discovered and placed there at that time.
