Historical Time Line of Significant Events

1800s: Fraternalism at Georgetown in the 19th century

1787 Elijah Craig establishes Royal Springs Academy; later renamed Rittenhouse Academy
1829 Georgetown College chartered, absorbs Rittenhouse Academy
1839 Tau Theta Kappa and Ciceronian local literary/debate societies founded
1857 FDQ (Kentucky G chapter) chartered in January; closed in April by faculty opposition; 5 initiates
1861 Civil War begins; student enrollment decimated; war ends 1865
1875 FDQ chapter rechartered in March; sends delegate to convention
1876 FDQ charter revoked, re-instated, and revoked for good in Fall semester; 12 initiates (total of 17)
188? Euepian women's literary society established

Early 1900s: The Greek system takes root at Georgetown

1903 Joseph Judson Taylor narrowly elected president of College; begins implementing "liberal" policies
1904 KA Order (BD chapter) chartered at invitation of Taylor (a KA alumnus)
1906 PKA Fraternity (AL chapter) chartered at invitation of Taylor
1907 Taylor resigns as president; relations with trustees never improved

1920s: Fraternities are banned then boom

1921 Georgetown bans fraternities: former KA's and PKA's continue as local clubs
1924 Q.T. Club organized, occupies Military St. house; numerous clubs founded; demise of literary societies
1925 The ban is lifted: Q.T. Club becomes GTA; other clubs adopt Greek-letter names; KA recharters
1926 GTA makes initial contact with QKN; PKA recharters
1927 GTA wins trophy for highest fraternity academics on campus; QKN inspection visits begin.
1928 GTA chartered as Kentucky-Alpha Chapter of QKN
1929 SK Sorority chartered (AX Chapter); Stock market crash begins Great Depression

Depression, Union and War: The brotherhood struggles to survive

1930 QKN moves to Jackson St. house in January; fire destroys Chapel (center of campus life)
1931 QKN moves to Estil Ct. house in January; College on the verge of closing (depression, fire, enrollment)
1935 QKN looses house on Estill Court, occupies various neighborhood houses for next 2 years
1937 QKN moves back into original home on Military St.
1938 FWP Sorority (AZ Chapter) chartered
1939Union of QKN and LCA: Kentucky-Alpha of QKN becomes Kappa-Omega of LCA
1941 LCA moves to Jackson St. house; US enters WWII Dec. 7
1942 FWP chapter closed; national sorority merges with DZ Sorority in 1946
1943 Last LCA brother on campus leaves for military service in spring: chapter operations are suspended

Life on Main Street

1946 LCA brothers return from war, occupy house on east Main St; KD Sorority (BL chapter) chartered
1949 LCA purchases and occupies house at 529 Main St.
1955 Dr. Ralph Curry initiated and becomes High Pi (chapter advisor); serves LCA in office for 33 years
1960's LCA house falls into disrepair, search for new house begins; SK house burns down
1969 FM Sorority (DH chapter) chartered
1970 FKT Fraternity (DQ chapter) chartered at invitation of President Mills, a FKT alumnus

Life on Hollyhock Lane

1971 LCA and other fraternities and sororities move into new houses on campus
1977 Chapter reaches highest number of active members ever: over 120
1980 PKA Fraternity charter suspended (rechartered 1984)
1987 Chapter reaches lowest number of active members since depression: under 15
1990's Chapter becomes largest fraternity on campus, wins numerous local and national awards
1993 Chapter wins Grand High Alpha award (LCA chapter of the year); won again in 1996, 1999, 2002
1999 AGD Sorority (QU chapter) chartered
2003 Chapter awarded Certificate of Merit by National Interfraternity Conference
(recognizing a top chapter amongst all NIC fraternities)
